My fork of the official code repository for Mastering Embedded Linux Development, Fourth Edition (Packt), which targets Linux 6.6 and the Yocto Project 5.0 (Scarthgap). I keep it in my account as a companion while studying embedded Linux — the book’s material overlaps nicely with the small-board side of my homelab.
The concepts
The book breaks down the four fundamental elements behind every embedded Linux project — the toolchain, the bootloader, the kernel, and the root filesystem — then shows how to generate the last three from scratch and automate the whole thing with Buildroot and the Yocto Project. Later chapters cover troubleshooting BitBake build failures, secure field updates with Mender or balena, prototyping with add-on boards, and talking to hardware without writing kernel device drivers.
How to use it
The code is organized into per-chapter folders (Chapter02, etc.), and the exercises run against real and emulated hardware: a BeaglePlay, a Raspberry Pi 4, and 64-bit Arm QEMU, driven from an Ubuntu 24.04 host with the Bootlin aarch64 toolchain, U-Boot, and Buildroot 2024.02 LTS. The upstream README also carries a useful errata section — corrected TI firmware repo URLs, a fixed tiboot3.bin path for booting the BeaglePlay, and notes on rebuilding the kernel without a built-in initramfs for NFS root.
This fork is unmodified — it’s here for study, and so my notes and experiments have a stable base to point at.
